Toba Centre for Children and Youth
The Toba Centre for Children and Youth has set a new standard for care and has initiated a progressive shift towards a more compassionate, coordinated, and effective response to child abuse in Manitoba. The Toba Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth who have experienced abuse.
The aim of the Toba Centre building is to reduce the stress on child victims during abuse investigations by providing a space where professionals from law enforcement, child protection, prosecution, mental health, medical services, and victim advocacy can work together with the child as the focus. The scope of work included asbestos abatement, an exterior façade refresh, and a new accessible entrance, and landscaped tranquility garden. The interior was completely transformed with a children’s play area, family rooms, multiple kitchens, medical exam rooms, and various office spaces for Toba Centre staff and various law enforcement agencies.
The renovations took place in an occupied building with the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Services call centre as the adjacent tenant. Their critical service operations continued uninterrupted throughout the renovation thanks to cooperative scheduling with our project partners.
This project had a profound impact on our team as we worked with the Toba Centre and design team to build a space that serves the most vulnerable in our community. John Bockstael further supported the project as part of the capital campaign cabinet.
