What to do when there is no digital pivot

For many businesses, a digital pivot has enabled them to survive or even thrive in the current environment. In construction, while the use of digital tools may have accelerated, there is no such thing as digital service delivery. We need a different strategy.

Our founder, Theodore Bockstael, created the company just two years before the first World War. Throughout his tenure, he endured the Spanish Flu pandemic, the Great Depression, and another World War. So, what were the tenets that got Theodore through the ever-present turmoil of the early 20th century?

Stay true to your values

Staying true to the values is non-negotiable, regardless of what is happening in the world around you. Strong values are the foundation of a strong company, and they are even more important to rely on as you work your way through the daily challenges of the pandemic.

Work hard

This isn’t easy. A lot of time and effort is required for extra planning, new ways of thinking, and good implementation of new processes.

Be agile

There is no better time than now to embrace innovation and new ways of doing things. Creative and incremental approaches to construction are necessary.

Don’t chase the market

Some companies may be forced to take drastic measures to meet short-term needs. However, chasing the market can lead to taking on too much risk that can compromise the future of the company. It’s important to stay the course – things will stabilize eventually.

Balance the long term with the short term

When the world and our usual ways of operating have been shaken and tested, it is imperative we maintain a long-term view as we attend to the immediate needs of the company.  In the words of Winston Churchill, “Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.”
